Following a campaign led by Lambeth Labour Councillor Jennifer Brathwaite, the Mayor of London has announced that cleaner buses will soon start running on routes through Brixton and Streatham.
A petition signed by hundreds of local residents calling for the Mayor to take action on air pollution caused by TfL buses was submitted earlier this year. The campaign was launched after figures showed that Brixton Road had exceeded the annual legal limit for diesel fume pollution after just four days.
The Mayor has promised to cut emissions by 50% over the next two years and work with Lambeth and work with Lambeth on initiatives to further reduce air pollution.
Buses with new engines that spew out 95% less NOx have just been introduced to the 109 bus route which passes through Brixton and Streatham and Brixton is already benefiting from retrofitted engines on routes 355 and 415. From the end of this year cleaner buses will be introduced bus routes 255, 319 and 333 on Streatham High Road.
